Bright Lanterns and Baking

"Like a lantern, learning lights the way — small hands can brighten the whole world."
-Author Unknown

What a busy and joyful week in Grade 5/6 as the students prepared for next week’s Puberty Fair on November 20th. All week the class worked together to share their learning engagements through their artwork and short presentations for the fair, practicing independence, respectful communication and showing real teamwork as they supported each other's progress.

Midweek we enjoyed a lovely St. Martin evening. The German students performed at the amphitheater in the blue park, and our class proudly carried the lanterns they had made in art for a parade around the island. It was wonderful to see the children so excited to share their creations and to spend time with the community.

In Math, we dove into a unit on ratio and proportion and immediately put those ideas into practice with a friendly cookie-recipe competition. Groups looked for recipes and used ratio and proportion to scale ingredients so there would be enough cookies for classmates, teachers, and family.

We then went shopping together for the supplies—an excellent chance to practice budgeting and measurement skills—before splitting into two teams for a bake-off: vanilla versus chocolate chip.

Students measured carefully, followed their scaled recipes, practiced kitchen safety, and then enjoyed a delicious cookie party to taste and celebrate their work.

I was impressed all week by thoughtful collaboration during Puberty Fair prep, the creativity shown in the lanterns for St. Martin, and the clear, real‑world application of ratio and proportion during the bake-off. I can’t wait to witness more of the students' growth through their Puberty Fair presentations next week. See you there!

Have a wonderful weekend to all of you.

Your homeroom teacher,
Ms. Pam
