Exploring Perspectives Through Harry Potter

We've all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That's who we really are.
-Sirius Black
This week in our Grade 5/6 class, we continued our journey through our unit under the theme "Sharing the Planet," with a particular focus on the concept of conflict. Using the beloved series of Harry Potter as our lens, we engaged in a variety of activities that deepened our understanding of how perspectives can shift based on new information and experiences.
Unpacking Perspective through Harry Potter
Our exploration began with an in-depth look at the relationship between Harry Potter and Professor Snape. The students analyzed different scenes from the story, observing how their perceptions of Snape evolved throughout the narrative. Initially, the children expressed their frustration with Snape's treatment of Harry, viewing him as a villain. However, as they delved deeper into the story, their feelings transformed. By the end of the activity, many students expressed admiration and respect for Snape's complex character.
To visually represent this journey of understanding, we utilized a set of nesting circles. This creative tool allowed the students to illustrate that what is visible on the surface may not always reflect deeper truths. Through this exercise, they learned an essential lesson: our perspectives can change when we uncover new layers of a situation.

Character Transformations and Magic Perspectives
In addition to examining Harry and Snape, the children participated in a fun activity where they transformed their own pictures into images of various characters from the Harry Potter universe. They then described these characters and shared their perspectives on magic. This activity not only sparked creativity but also encouraged the students to articulate how different characters perceive the world of magic.

Looking ahead, we are gearing up for an exciting "Duel Club" next week. In this lively debate, the characters will discuss whether magic should be revealed to the world, drawing on their unique perspectives. This promises to be a fantastic opportunity for the students to engage in critical thinking and articulate their thoughts in a fun and imaginative setting.

A Moving Experience with Mr. Andrei Ivanovich Moiseenko
Another highlight of our week was a visit from Holocaust survivor Mr. Andrei Ivanovich Moiseenko. Mr. Andrei shared his harrowing experiences during World War II, providing the students with a firsthand account of how conflict and differing ideas can profoundly impact people's lives. This powerful session reinforced the themes of our unit on "Sharing the Planet," as the children were able to connect historical perspectives with contemporary issues.

Overall, this week has been filled with meaningful learning experiences that have inspired our Grade 5/6 students to think critically about perspectives and the importance of understanding diverse viewpoints. As we continue our exploration of "Sharing the Planet," we look forward to more engaging activities and discussions that challenge our thinking and broaden our horizons.
Have a wonderful weekend to all of you.
Your homeroom teacher,
Ms. Pam
